Why do Western women often wear Muslim garb when in Muslim countries?
Is this out of respect for another culture, for their own safety, or because they must? Certainly in the case of the British sailor, it appears to be dictated by Iran. Would it be fair to require Muslim women visiting here to wear more Western garb, or at least not cover their faces?
In many countries it is dictated by the government. In others, it depends on the role of the woman. Most journalists wouldn’t get interviews if they didn’t adhere to the local customs. Some fear retaliation from ignorant extremists. Also, in this country people can wear anything they want, so I think one of the greatest things about America is that there are no specific guidelines about what you can’t wear, only that you have to wear something.
